The SOE’s Mathematics Leadership Corps was recognized by the California Council on Teacher Education (CCTE) with the Award in Advancing Current Pedagogy for the Common Core Standards. The MLC received the award at the CCTE annual conference in San Diego on October 23, 2015. All public and private universities in California competed for the award.
Under the direction of SOE clinical associate professor Katharine Clemmer, the MLC focuses on building teacher leadership and leadership networks through reciprocal relationships among students, teachers, teacher leaders and administrators in the form of shared leadership, continuous improvement and student-led learning. The resulting math program is grounded in evidence-based instructional practices. Teachers continually utilize coaching and student data to improve practice and attain the MLC goal where all students have the mathematical reasoning and procedural skills to design creative solutions to complex problems.
In addition to embracing the process of mathematical problem solving, the MLC is comprised of two research-supported professional development programs: Art of Teaching for Elementary Schools and Mathematics Leadership & Learning by Design for Secondary Schools. These professional development programs focus on teacher leadership and systematic instructional improvement that result in a significant increase in student engagement and achievement.
In 2013, the MLC partnered with the Culver City Unified School District to provide professional development for kindergarten through grade twelve math teachers. Most recently, the program expanded to El Segundo Unified School District and the Wiseburn/Da Vinci Unified School District.
The MLC is a collaborative partnership between Loyola Marymount University, the Cotsen Foundation for the ART of TEACHING, Leonetti/O’Connell Family Foundation and the Louis L. Borick Foundation.
